Primarily letters to Bates from family and friends while on fund-raising trips to Great Britain 1833-36, re. routine social graces and some religious issues. Letters from l836 discuss Bates's decision to break with Quaker doctrine and be baptised. 1812 letter from brother Benjamin requests Elisha and family visit; 1850 letter appoints Bates the Ohio delegate to the World's Peace Conference in Germany. Some items are photocopies.
